10 Creative Plant-Based Sandwich Ideas for Kids

June 25, 2024 Alex Caspero and Whitney English

Creative plant-based sandwich ideas for kids! Need some easy meal ideas that are nutritious and kid-friendly? Here are some of our favorite vegan sandwiches.

We’re always in the market for healthy, nutrient-packed, and versatile options that we can feed our kiddos and feel good about. What better option than some yummy sandwiches?

Sandwiches can be packed with a variety of fresh vegetables, whole grains, and plant-based proteins like hummus, tofu, or nut butter, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that support little growing bodies.

Whether your kids like to deconstruct sandwiches or eat them whole, they’re a great way to combine several types of food in one simple meal.

Plus, sandwiches can be served with a side of things like:

  • smoothies
  • fresh-cut veggie sticks with dip or sauce
  • fresh fruit, like apple slices, oranges, or berries
  • yogurt, like our homemade almond cashew yogurt
  • fermented foods, like sauerkraut or kimchi
  • a glass of fortified soy milk

10 Creative Plant-Based Sandwich Ideas for Kids

1. Rainbow Veggie Sandwich

Layer colorful vegetables like thinly sliced red bell peppers, yellow carrots, green spinach, purple cabbage, and orange sweet potatoes on whole-grain bread with a spread of hummus, cashew-based cheese sauce, or mashed avocado.

2. PB&J with a Twist

Swap out the jelly for fresh fruit slices like strawberries, bananas, or blueberries. Alternatively, make some homemade chia jam using frozen strawberries blended with chia seeds and some optional lemon juice. Use peanut, almond, or sunflower butter spread on a whole-grain bread your child likes.

3. Chickpea Salad Sandwich

Mash canned, drained chickpeas with vegan mayo, diced celery, red onions, and a dash of mustard. Serve on whole-grain bread or pita with lettuce and tomato. Here’s a recipe you can use for inspiration (and adjust as needed for your child’s preferences).

4. Vegan BLT

Use crispy tempeh bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado slices on toasted whole-grain bread with a smear of vegan mayo.

5. Pear Grilled “Cheeze” Sandwich

This is a healthy plant-based grilled cheese, using pear slices and a zesty cashew cheese made with white miso paste. Grab our full recipe here.

6. Avocado and Tomato Sandwich

Spread mashed avocado on whole-grain bread and top with tomato slices, sprouts, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.

7. Nut Butter and Apple Sandwich

Spread almond or sunflower seed butter on whole-grain bread and add thin apple slices and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

8. Tofu Salad Sandwich

Crumble tofu and mix with vegan mayo, chopped celery, green onions, and a pinch of turmeric. Serve on bread, a pita pocket, or a tortilla with lettuce.

9. Cucumber and Cream Cheese Sandwich

Spread vegan cream cheese on whole-grain bread and layer with thin cucumber slices, and optionally some fresh dill and a dash of black pepper. You could also add some grated carrots.

10. Roasted Red Pepper and Hummus Sandwich

Spread hummus on whole-grain bread and add roasted red peppers, spinach, and shredded carrots for a crunchy, flavorful sandwich.
