This sweet, creamy smoothie is loaded with fall flavor and packed with vitamin A, an important nutrient for supporting your kiddo’s immune system during sick season.

The secret to this extra creamy sweet potato pie smoothie? Frozen taters! Frozen sweet potato gives bulk to this frozen beverage without the need for a base like bananas that might have overpowered the flavor. The result is the most luxurious fall sip packed with immune system supporting carotenes – AKA plant-based vitamin A.
Tips for Success
Do cook your sweet potato before freezing it (don’t freeze it raw). Then your sweet potato will be all ready to go when you want to make your smoothie. We cut ours into chunks, roasted it in the oven, let it cool, and then froze it. But you can also poke holes in your sweet potato with a fork, bake it whole, and then scoop it out and freeze that.
Since the smoothie itself doesn’t get cooked, we recommend using alcohol-free vanilla. In regular baked goods, the amount of alcohol-containing vanilla extract that is used is generally small enough to be safe for kids, especially after undergoing baking at high temperatures. Since that’s not the case in a smoothie, it’s best to use alcohol-free vanilla. This can be found in some grocery stores in the form of a liquid or we’ve also seen it as a powder.

Sweet Potato Pie Smoothie
Equipment
- 1 blender
Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen sweet potato
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1 1/2 cups milk of choice
- 2-3 dates (pitted)
- 1 Tablespoon hemp seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon alcohol-free vanilla
- pinch of nutmeg
- 1 cup of ice (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare your potato. I chopped and roasted a sweet potato, but you could just scoop canned sweet potato puree into an ice cube tray or silicone mold to make frozen cubes. Making a "baked" sweet potato in the microwave also works.
- Freeze your sweet potato. Sweet potato should be cooked before freezing.
- Once you’ve got your frozen tater, in a high-powered blender combine frozen sweet potato, oats, milk of choice, dates (pitted), hemp seeds, cinnamon, alcohol-free vanilla, and a pinch of nutmeg.
- Optional: Add a cup of ice for a frostier treat!
