13 Plant-Based Finds at Kroger (King Soopers)

13 plant-based finds at Kroger! Also known as King Soopers, this is one of the largest grocery chains around. Here are some of the best vegan foods at Kroger.

Kroger is a huge grocery retailer with locations all over the United States. One of their biggest chain names is King Soopers, depending on where you live.

Over the last few years especially, the plant-based options at Kroger have exploded in response to an increased consumer demand for these products. There are a growing variety of plant-based items sold under their own generic brand name, Simple Truth and Simple Truth Organic.

Below are 13 plant-based finds at Kroger, plus ideas for how to use them!

1. Lightlife Tempeh Bacon

Tempeh is a fermented soybean product and a source of natural probiotics as well as plant protein. Plain tempeh is also great, but if you want a pre-flavored sandwich filler this is a nice change of pace (makes a great TLT = Tempeh Lettuce & Tomato!).

2. Simple Truth Organic Dried Seaweed

Our kids have become big fans of dried seaweed, which are a great nut-free snack to send to school or daycare. The ingredients are generally just seaweed, oil and salt but check the label to be sure, especially with different flavors.

3. Fresh and Frozen Produce

Kroger has an abundance of fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables to choose from. Shop the seasonal produce and then head over to the frozen section to find tropical fruit mixes for smoothies, antioxidant-rich wild blueberries, mixed vegetables, and edamame.

4. Sauerkraut

Did you know that sauerkraut is one of the best sources of natural probiotics? This fermented cabbage condiment makes a good sandwich topper, addition to slow cooker recipes, and unique side dish for kids to try.

5. Hummus

There are fewer grocery stores with a longer list of hummus flavors. Whether you need traditional, garlic, Mediterranean, roasted red pepper, spicy, garden vegetable, edamame, or dark chocolate dessert hummus, you’ll find it here. Hummus is a wonderful dip and sandwich spread. We also like to use it in homemade salad dressings and served alongside falafel.

6. Simple Truth Plant-Based Hatch Queso

Need a fast vegan queso dip to keep in the fridge or take to a party? This one is made with a cashew and green chile base, and has B12 added. Our kids have enjoyed this as a dip for baby carrots, bell pepper slices, and even burritos.

7. Field Roast Sausages

While we don’t advocate for plant-based diets that rely fully on packaged meat and dairy substitutes, there are some great options for the times you want them. Field Roast makes a few types of vegan sausages that we’ll use in soups and stews, scrambles for breakfast burritos, or sliced with dip for our kiddos as part of an easy meal.

8. Plant-Based Yogurt, Cheese, and Cream Cheese

If you need plant-based dairy products that work well as a 1:1 substitute, you’ll find plenty of options here. Kroger carries several varieties of sweetened and unsweetened plant yogurts made with things like oat, soy, coconut, and almond. They also offer plant-based cream cheese, cheese shreds, slices, spreads, and blocks.

9. Plant-Based Milk

Whether you like oat, soy, rice, almond, help, macadamia, hazelnut, pea, or cashew, Kroger carries all the non-dairy milks. The best part is that they’re kept right next to the dairy milk and easy to find. There are always unsweetened, flavored, full fat, and barista varieties.

10. Just Egg

Need an egg replacement? Just Egg is a liquid egg product primarily made of mung beans and sold in the refrigerated section next to the conventional eggs. This is a great substitute when making breakfast scrambles or omelets, as well as microwaving in a mug for a perfectly bagel-shaped round sandwich egg.

11. Nuts and Seeds

In addition to the gamut of packaged mixed nuts, Kroger has a bulk section where you can find containers of raw, unsalted nuts like cashews, almonds, walnuts, and Brazil nuts. They also carry ground flax meal, chia seeds, and hemp seeds, generally found in the baked goods section.

12. Tofu

You can always find the whole range of tofu here, from silken for smoothies, dips, and sauces, to extra firm for roasting, slicing for sandwiches, and scrambling. They even sell pre-flavored, baked varieties for stir fries, kabobs, and bowls.

13. Canned Foods

Kroger has a long line of great plant-based canned foods that fit on a predominantly plant-based diet. Between canned beans, lentils, coconut milk, green beans, peaches, pears, and other fruits and vegetables, you can stock your pantry for months. They also offer a variety of salsa, diced and stewed tomatoes, and enchilada sauces.

Whether you have a King Soopers chain near you or are traveling through an area that does, we hope this list of 13 plant-based finds at Kroger comes in handy!
